Subject/Title of Window: Canterbury Cross

Brief Description of Subject: The most prominent window in the church is the Rose Window, depicting the Canterbury Cross. The Canterbury cross is a stylized image and reminder of our patron saint, St. Thomas a’Becket, the former Archbishop of Canterbury. The original Canterbury Cross, dating from around 850 AD, was excavated in 1867 in St. George’s Street in Canterbury, England. It was subsequently bequeathed to the Canterbury Heritage Museum. Cast in bronze, the cross incorporated a number of sophisticated techniques for that day. The windows were designed, full-sized and hand painted by Sarah Hall with technical assistance and installation by Helga and Norbert Sattler. Lamberts full antique glass was used exclusively with traditional glass paints for the windows. All of the work was done in Canada.

Type of Glass and Technique: Antique or Cathedral Glass

The MSGC is a constantly evolving database. Not all the data that has been collected by volunteers has been sorted and entered. Not every building has been completely documented.

All images in the Index are either born-digital photographs of windows or buildings or are scans of slides, prints, or other published sources. These images have been provided by volunteers and the quality of the material varies widely.
